Adrian Ross defines the meaning to live life as a true renaissance man. For the past 10 years Adrian has built Home up to 2 locations in San Diegos hottest neighborhoods. From merchandising both Home Mercantile locations to building Homes brand HomeMade to moonlighting as the front man to BunnyKitty’s band the Slugganauts. Its a wonder how this father of three beautiful girls found time to answer these questions. To read this interview featuring Adrian Ross. Please click the link.

To kick things off, if you can start with some general background?

My name is Adrian Ross. I was born and raised in San Diego, California. My Father who lived most of his time in southern Florida turned me onto fashion at a young age. He taught me about his favorite designers at the time like Giorgio Armani, Issy Miyaki and Andrew Fezza. This was in the mid 80′s, so it really opened my mind. He taught me about how quality in your clothes should look and feel. Especially how seams should line up with the pattern of a shirt, or how it flows with how you walk. Ever since then I would find comfort and inspiration in finding clothes that best fit my personality. I also credit my Father for my shopping problem.

When did Home start and who is involved?

Home as a clothing store started in the summer of 2002. My brothers David and Nick opened the store with the help of our Father. We felt it was fitting to carry on our Uncles rich history with HOME and dedicate it in his memory.

What is Home to you?

To me HOME has been my life for over 10 years. It has been a huge part of my creativity and inspiration. It brings together all that i most enjoy and hope to influence onto our customers. Music, art and fashion is the driving force HOME originated with and remains with to this day.

Are there any particular designers, not necessarily within clothing, that inspired your style or currently inspire you?

I have not been overly inspired by clothing designers. I have been more inspired by people who can blend different looks together and wear them well. There are a lot of designers that make great things, but I have never been one to rep much of the same designer. My take on fashion as I have gotten older is pulling off a timeless look that sits right outside the box. I want every piece in my closet to be something I could still wear at 65. If I could travel one place and shop it would be London. London has truly inspired me. From the mod, to the punk, to the batcave goth, to the preppy and the soccer hooligan, I find myself constantly looking for past and current London street fashion. Paul Simonon from The Clash is my favorite fashion icon.

What neighborhood do you closely identify with? What makes it so unique to you?

Our newest store located in North Park, is just north of downtown San Diego. It has been up and coming with its diverse residents, restaurants and shopping. It still is very urban which keeps it funky and hip. Between our 2 locations I enjoy being around North Park cause it allows me to step up what I wear to the store as opposed to our Encinitas location that is on the beach.

What is your most treasured find while digging for clothes?

I collect rock tee’s so I would have to say my most treasured find on a pic would be the vintage Adidas RUN DMC sweatshirt and 1981 JACKSONS tour tee we have framed in our Encinitas store. My current personal treasured pic would have to be the 1987 LOVE AND ROCKETS tee I didn’t bother showing my brother.

If you were deserted island what would be your top 5 albums you would want with you?

I would say the first five MICHAEL JACKSON albums, but I will try and show some music diversity.
1. BAD-Michael Jackson
2. THE SINGLES 86>98-Depeche Mode
3. ELECTRIC-The Cult
4. SONGS IN THE KEY OF LIFE-Stevie Wonder
5. SHOUT AT THE DEVIL-Motley Crue

It’s kind of known that you are a die hard Micheal Jackson fan. When did this start and why?

I was a fan of Michael Jackson the first time I can remember seeing him in the ‘BEAT IT’ video when MTV first aired it. I can remember hearing my Sister say to my Father,”That’s Michael Jackson.” I remember thinking to myself that he must be somebody. I fell out of music for a bit, but rediscovered Michael Jackson when the ‘BLACK OR WHITE’ video aired after The Simpsons. I was mesmerized at how he moved and how cool he looked. Michael Jackson was always around through my younger years, but it was like my world had just been opened up. The way he looked never bothered me like it did to a lot of people. I became a total Michael Jackson die hard when most people started to give up on him and because of that I got a lot of crap. I dove in head first in finding and collecting anything Michael Jackson. To me the quality and range of his voice spoke to me. The way he danced and performed inspired me. Music is therapeutic and while most in my generation would escape into The Cure, The Smiths, or Nirvana, I would escape into the music of Michael Jackson. Although I am devastated of the death of Michael Jackson, I am pleased that he has finally gotten the respect he deserves as one of the greatest artists of all time. This generation will get to see him for that and not all the bullshit he was painted to be.

You were the front man for a few Rock n’ Roll bands here in San Diego and L.A. What drove you to become a singer/songwritter?

I had a good run in a few bands. I didn’t make any real money doing it, but i am proud to have been able to experience what I have experienced. I got to do a lot that not everyone gets to experience. I always enjoyed singing and performing. I started out in drama and was looking to really start some kind a path towards improv or making my way to ‘SATURDAY NIGHT LIVE’. I auditioned for a play that required me to sing. I flubbed it hard, not even being able to make it past the first note. I vowed to never sing again. I finally built up the courage again when I discovered karaoke. With the help of alcohol I was free to run around and make a fool of myself performing and singing for a crowd of bar flys. I quickly discovered there is no future in karaoke, so I set out to start a band and the rest is history.

What is your vision with Home/Home Made label?

I am really hoping to grow our HOME stores in some key regions. I really want to see us develop our HOME MADE brand and use our stores as the launching pad. We started out in our stores as a unique shopping experience with the styles we carry, and incorporating our select vintage and resale. We are proud at being one of the first who has done this successfully. We want to see that continue. Our HOME MADE brand will focus on quality, unique pieces that will stand the test of time. It is my goal to make HOME MADE a timeless trend that can stay in any ones closet and pass down to their grand kids.
